01
Plan
Define the useful outcome, operating boundary, and material risks before selecting a technology.
Responsible technology
Responsible engineering connects performance, reliability, safety, cost, and resource demand. Optimising only one of them usually moves the burden elsewhere.
Sustainability
Lifecycle discipline
01
Define the useful outcome, operating boundary, and material risks before selecting a technology.
02
Choose architectures that make resource demand, control, security, and failure behaviour observable.
03
Measure real demand and quality in production; remove waste without transferring risk to users or operators.
04
Plan migration, data handling, model withdrawal, equipment reuse, and secure disposal before obsolescence becomes an incident.
Engineering priorities
The questions change by system. The expectation does not: understand the operating consequence before making the design habitual.
A
Provision for evidence, not anxiety.
Capacity margins remain necessary for reliability. The discipline is to distinguish resilient headroom from permanent over-provisioning, and to revisit the assumption as demand changes.
B
Model size is not a business outcome.
We examine whether a smaller model, retrieval method, conventional algorithm, or redesigned workflow can produce the required quality with less compute, data, cost, and operational complexity.
C
Maintainability is resource efficiency.
Systems that can be understood, changed, migrated, and operated safely avoid premature replacement. Documentation, observability, testing, and open interfaces are therefore sustainability concerns as well as engineering concerns.
Important distinction
Reliability, safety, accessibility, security, and useful performance can justify additional resources. The responsible decision is the one that can explain the trade-off, demonstrate the need, and revisit the assumption when conditions change.
